La Voix Humaine

Shattered by their break-up, a woman calls up her ex-lover. Pleading with the voice on the other end of the line, she sinks deeper and deeper into despair. With a touch of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, we watch the scene, and the woman herself, unravel. Four of Melbourne’s finest emerging opera singers star in one of opera’s most powerful monologues, where a lonely woman lays bare the heartbreak of unrequited love. Adelaide Greenaway, April Foster, Bethany Eloise and Lisa Lally take on the stark emotional honesty in a piece based on an original play by Jean Cocteau, where “the telephone is sometimes more dangerous than the revolver, its tangled cord drains us of our strength while giving us nothing in return.”

With its heartbreaking portrayal of a relationship’s breakdown, the intensely voyeuristic La Voix Humaine by Francis Poulenc is theatre at its most brutal.

Taking place in a series of tiny rooms, BK Opera has taken a 20th-century opera classic and created a unique and visceral theatre experience. This is opera up-close, intimate and unrestrained.
